According to Serge Pirard (who now owns Ron's loom) since 1985, Ron made more than 650 moulds and deckles, shipped to people in the UK, Europe, the USA, Australia and beyond. He has a BSc in Paper Science from the University of Manchester and worked in a half-dozen machine mills before joining the family business where he introduced the first alkaline-sized, mould-made watercolor papers and hand-made papers in the world. Here is a closeup of the back up of the mould showing the sewing. And it's so fun and easy a child could make it with just a little help from Mommy. Note also the diagonal stay inserted to help maintain the rectangular shape of the moulds. Since 1987 this has led to some whitish discolouration in the surrounding wire. Then this could be used to electroplate copper on to the carbon producing a copy of the original that was sewn onto the mould.
In 1974, prior to taking over Hayle Mill from W & R Balston Ltd, I succeeded in securing a large contract from the Richard de Bas museum in Ambert, France.
Actually it could have been as the design idea of the mediaeval laid pattern and watermarks was meant to emulate papers of that period. The shadows around the chain lines were caused by the wooden support bars in the mould. It is unusual for the stay to be nailed to the ribs, probably reflecting the very poor condition of the moulds before they were replaced by new ones in about 1975. A loose cover would of course obscure the laid appearance. Make sure your detox drink doesn't cheat the system and strip your body of the nutrients needed to pass a test. When you see a work on paper in the future, I hope that you will not only appreciate the artistic image that sits on top, but also value the information embedded in the paper itself. watermarks dover 1976 handmade paper In both traditions, the laid structure in the paper forms because the fibers from the pulp that collect on the mould sink into the small spaces between the wire or bamboo, leaving fewer fibers on the protruding parts of the mould.
Because of the flexible construction of the mould, no shadows from the supporting frame are visible. This in turn helped to rescue Hayle Mill as it was a good proportion of our income. One of the most attractive and interesting venues was the historic Alta Club in Salt Lake City which co-hosted the talk with the University of Utah Marriott Library. Paper conservation fellow Leonie Mller shares with Index readers the material qualities of paper and how its structures reveal the process of how its made. They were made by Amies in 1/1905 for Joseph Batchelor & Son, presumably for notepaper. A watermark in a laid paper hand made at wookie hole. This is one of the few pairs of moulds that belonged to Joseph Batchelor & Son of Ford Mill, Little Chart, near Ashford in Kent. However the last time I visited was a brief holiday in California in 1999. The watermark Batchelor & Son Kent illustrates how much of a letter could be made with one piece of wire (see the H for example) and notice how the K has been distorted by part of the wire profile rolling over the laid line.

Not only was this a wide stretch for most people (bearing in mind the mould was held a little way in front of the body) but it was also difficult to keep the weight even from side to side, which could make for "wedgy" sheets. A really old watermarked lamp commission by yours truly. Tovil was the industrial village near to Hayle Mill (sadly it is now all modern housing estates; there is very little employment in Tovil now).
The paper was hand made in Italy 450+ years ago. The next problem was that if we used a wire heavy enough to show clearly in the sheet, it would either degrade the detail or require much too large a mark. Naturally they also looted the French shore when the chance arose and made a healthy living from smuggling. This is an exceptionally fine pair of moulds used to make custom notepaper for Ryman's, the stationers. This is of course a great oversimplification.
But there are plenty of grown ups making paper too.

Soon after making the decision I contacted Claire van Vliet of the Janus Press in Vermont and we conceived the idea of a book of histories of various papers which would be illustrated with samples of them. The slight bluish cast to these images (and some others on the site), is not a true reflection of the moulds but a camera quirk. The crest has been changed and the full name of the bank was now used. The zig zag edging watermark is in place but the lettering identifying the bank has been removed. Note the depressed oval which would make a darker area in the sheet above which might have been printed an engraved image. The head represents that of Christ as transferred to the kerchief of St Berenice (or Veronica as it is said to be the Vera Icon or true image) when she wiped his face as he carried the cross to Golgotha. This antique laid paper with a watermark was presumably made in the 16th century in Italy. This piece of paper shows where the mould made indentations. His superior knowledgeof paper making was equaledonly by hiscommitmentto bringpaper making and paper crafting to the masses in an easy, fun and affordable way.

As I hope this site illustrates, moulds are objects of great interest and beauty; but how are they made? Wool was used to give paper a specific tonality and texture, making it more voluminous and rougher on the surface. They were used for the renowned Gwas Gregynog (Gregynog Press) in mid Wales. Except for the photographs and the mill diagram, all the papers used in this project were handmade by Barcham Green and Company at Hayle Mill, Maidstone in Kent, England. | And here is the end result - the watermark in the paper. Suddenly, tiny shadows appear, cast by the uneven surface of the web of cellulose fibers that form the sheet.

Harmsworth founded the Daily Mail in the early years of the Amalgamated Press. The laid wires are 5 mm apart with no backing wire or cover so they could not have retained fibre, unless maybe a loose cover was applied if so why? The mould is submerged several times and shaken in a rigorous back and forth movement in between dunks. I would like to thank him and his colleagues and the members and staff at the Alta Club for all their kindness and hospitality. It would have to last for maybe fifty years and thus not become dated.
At this stage of the process, paper is very vulnerable.
Initially it was intended to make an electrotype etched plate but, as this had a tapered cross-section, the detail would have been blurred, and so the rolled wires were formed by hand. Comments (0). It is worth remembering that it was common practice for centuries for mills to subcontract work out for a variety of reasons. Also the watermarking wire is sometimes bright and shiny, sometimes dull; I don't know why. Today I am excited to share with you just how simple it is to create a watermark, I have to admit, I haven't made paper in a while and I needed a fun project to jumpstart me back in action.
